When Jay - Sir Jason - agreed to the king's plan to marry the princess and take over the throne to ensure it didn't fall into the wrong hands, he thought it was a good idea. He could marry one of his best friends and be comfortable for the rest of his life. He would be a fool to pass up something like that, even with the risks that came from having so much power.
He did not agree to being kidnapped by pirates mere hours after the engagement was announced.

Summary
When his best friend gets engaged, and then married, Mouse has to sort out some old feelings he never managed to let go of. No one in his life had any reason to want him there in a greater capacity than he had been, so he tried to pull away, at least enough to take care of his own heartache. He never expected another Halstead to pull him right back into the fold, and it had nothing to do with pity or sympathy.
Someone wanted him. It was just that simple.
