    “Do you like men?”

Miles nearly spit out his iced tea at the question. “What?

Phoenix didn’t even have the sense to look embarrassed. “Well, I never really asked when I propositioned you. It didn’t seem relevant, considering our agreement was for optics.”

“You think I was queerbaiting?” Miles gasped, scandalized.

Phoenix shrugged. “Six years ago you would have considered it tactfully advancing your career.”

“I spoke at pride events!” Miles exclaimed, drawing some dirty looks from the elderly couple in the booth across from them.

“All I’m saying is I’ve never seen you with anyone, especially not any men.”

Miles rolled his eyes at this. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t have any time to go on dates with handsome young pursuers while I was busy saving my husband who jumped off of a bridge!

At 20 years old, Phoenix asks Miles Edgeworth to marry him. Fifteen years and a lot of W-2s later, they finally say their vows.

“Come in, Miles, don’t be a stranger.”

It’s a gentle pull, an invitation despite himself.

(Still here I carry my old delicious burdens,
I carry them, men and women, I carry them with me wherever I go,
I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them,
I am fill’d with them, and I will fill them in return.)

“Well, I just…” Athena began, “I know he’s pretty self sufficient, but anyone would be shaken after receiving a death threat like that. You… you heard about that, didn’t you, Mr. Wright?”
Phoenix gaped at her, the new information rattling around his head like a ping-pong ball. Except this ping-pong ball wanted to kill one of his best friends.
“I… hadn’t heard of that before now,” he answered, speaking slowly so his brain could keep up with his words.
“I’m sure there’s a good explanation!” Athena answered, a bit too quickly. “Maybe, uh… Maybe Mr. Edgeworth’s phone died!”
They both stared at each other for a few moments, a fake smile plastered onto his employee’s face.
Athena’s smile grew sheepish, but she didn’t correct herself, likely because she had come to the same realization he had: if Edgeworth hadn’t reached out to him by now, it was a conscious decision not to do so.
And that wasn’t the kind of thing people usually wanted to point out to their already upset boss.
“Could you keep an eye on things around here a bit longer for me?” he asked, with a small upturn to his lip. “I need to have a talk with a certain Chief Prosecutor.”

Miles Edgeworth makes a visit to the jail cell of a certain Kristoph Gavin, which does not end well for the latter.
This is not that story: this is the aftermath.
