It had been a few years since their victory over Yuan Shao and now that Cao Cao was the undisputed ruler of the central plains, he sought to reward his vassals for their loyalty. Indeed, Xiahou Dun could imagine no one else who deserved it more– Just as Xiahou Dun had been with Cao Cao since the beginning of his campaign, Xun Yu had chosen to serve their lord when he was but one of the many warlords vying for supremacy. Thus, he was pleased to hear of his cousin’s desire to petition Xun Yu to be appointed as one of the Three Excellencies, second only to Cao Cao in rank and prestige.
Yet, that petition was thrown away by none other than Xun Yu himself.
