Summary
The Illyrian Mountains had never pretended to be anything other than what they were. Life within them was cold and cruel, only the strongest surviving their harsh winters, and there was only one thing that seemed to truly ease the lives of those who had chosen to settle within the ranges... but it wasn't something for the feint of heart. Slavery had become quite the popular trade throughout the reign of Amarantha, and while the High Lord knew of it- had openly declared it illegal, even- it had not stopped once her 50 years of power had passed
So, where did that leave those still bound in chains, I hear you ask?
It left them right where they had been before, serving masters who would sooner kill them than admit to their ownership when discovered by the High Lord and those he trusted most, and this, is where we find our main character, Nyx.
A slave for as long as he could remember, he'd been sold to the Warlord Zechariah of Stormhaven, the northernmost war-camp in the mountains thirteen years ago alongside fellow slave, Daemon, and here, he feared he would stay until the end of his days. That is, until an early check-in on the training of the females results in a way no one could have possibly predicted. -

Summary
Emery Sorrengail's life had been planned out for her from the time she began walking and it hadn't ever deviated. Her mother had decided, upon seeing that she didn't have the same sickly disposition as her twin, that she would become a rider once she was old enough. Training began early and her opinion on the matter didn't make a difference. She would follow in the footsteps of the older brother who she was the spitting image of and the older sister who had always made everything look easy.
No pressure.
After her father and brother die, however, the plan seems to change. Her mother pulls even further away, which she didn't honestly think was ever possible, her older sister buries herself in battle and coddling Violet and she is left to pick up the pieces and continue on. But when her mother decides, six month before Conscription Day, that Violet will be joining her in the Riders Quadrant rather than going to the scribes, she suddenly finds herself being forced to play bodyguard.
Great, just how she wanted to spend her time in college, keeping her sister safe in a place designed to kill her.
