    Summary

It wasn’t fair. How could this happen? Wei Wuxian hissed through his teeth as he yanked a wavy petal from underneath the nail on his left pinky, pain stinging down his hand as it came out speckled with blood.

He stuck his finger into his mouth, cleaning off the dripping blood from his now splintered fingernail and glared harshly at the yellow petal. He didn’t know this one yet. He thought he was over plucking petals and thorns from his body. That part of his life was supposed to be over.

Wei Wuxian sighed loudly as he took his pinky out of his mouth and caught another petal along the edge of his right thumb. It was going to be a long night.

    Summary

In the aftermath of the novel, the Lan elders cite an old Confucian rule in refusing to acknowledge the unwitnessed marriage between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji: it is inappropriate, they say, for a younger brother to marry before the elder.

In the face of mounting attempts to drive Wei Wuxian from the Cloud Recesses, and rampant infighting for the position of Jin sect leadership, Jiang Cheng proposes marriage to Lan Xichen. The marriage, he says, will cement their allyship and bring stability to the crumbling coalition of the Great Sects.

Unfortunately, the new couple just do not get along.

Xicheng enter a marriage of convenience. After much strife, they agree to try anew. Eight years pass in peaceful co-existence, but they eventually capitulate to requests from elders to annul the marriage and beget heirs. However, they soon realize that it's not so easy to put eight years of marriage behind them. Falling repeatedly into bed together, they begin to navigate a shameful, secret relationship.

    Summary

And then came a bestial growl behind him.

It was long and deep and rattling and the hairs on Jiang Cheng's back rose, and even the corpses paused their gait. They didn't seem to be as intimidated, looking merely–curious and intrigued about the interruption and what would happen then.

    That is, until they moved.

It's been a long time since he's seen the dead–scared. Because this was what it was. Submissive, pliant, was more like it—scared as well sometimes, but in a different way than this.

These corpses, almost after having taken a look with their empty sockets upon the animal behind Jiang Cheng, stumbled back harshly, bringing their arms up for protection, silent moans of pleading, almost, ripping out of their chests.

Jiang Cheng was ready to accept an even cruder death when the black shifting shapes entered the corners of his vision. A billowing fabric, of robes he thought, slowly flew and began to swallow his form at both sides, almost as if making a protective, comforting nest for him.
