It's lovely up here; all meadows dotted with wildflowers, wind-beaten tracks criss-crossing this way and that through the fields, weaving inland to the pinewoods. The sun's hot on his back as he passes ramshackle stone walls, long since crumbled to piles of ancient rubble and scree, and then the path winds downwards, still following the line of the coast until Sirius finds himself outside an old white cottage, tucked away behind the hill with a rose garden that faces out to the sea.
Sirius moves to Cornwall for the summer and meets a rude, beautiful boy who is writing a book that may or may not be about dragons.

Something hooks into his chest yet again as Caleb is finishing up the third braid, moving to braid the ends together. It nags at him as he stands up on coltish legs, Caleb looking a little confused as he does. It’s urgent yet creeping all the same as he excuses himself to go to sleep, the shadow of something he can’t quite shake even as he wakes up the next day, limbs and heart oddly heavy, listening to Caleb’s soft snores from the other side of the bed.
His food tastes of nothing. His beer tastes of nothing. Fjord sees valleys and snow-covered mountains and blue skies and stars and moons and Fjord feels nothing.

It’d started off simple, which he should have recognized as a bad omen from the start. Just as few cultists with sharp knives and nasty but manageable magic. It’d been fine until a tear opened up above them and a red demon creature crawled out of it and started hauling off heavy hits.
But they were almost done now, Fjord knew. The thing was looking rough, rotten meat sloughing off its bones, one of its eyes blinded. Another good round and it would be gone.
That’s when he heard it:
“Jester,” in a voice so strangled that it took him a moment to recognize as Caleb’s.
And Jester’s response, a desperate “Caleb!”.

And then, suddenly, it feels like it’s burning, stinging him from inside. Fjord hisses, looking down at his palm. It looks normal enough, aside from the angry welts from the scratching, even though he has the impression it should be ugly red and bleeding.
It’s the hand with the scar from Dashilla’s Lair, Fjord realizes abruptly, and Caleb comes unbidden to his brain. A cold wind blows and he shudders. Caleb isn’t safe, Fjord thinks, and knows it’s true.
“Fjord?” Darrow’s voice breaks him out of it. He looks concerned. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, I just remembered I have a thing with my—” He can’t find a word. The scar pinches. “I have to go.”
Fjord turns tail and runs.

Caleb likes to think if he is overly good at one thing, one skill he wishes he didn’t have, it’s fucking up.
It usually ends in disaster. That time he tried to help cook dinner that resulted in Caduceus hating salt for a month. That time he tried to make a light joke to Yasha and reminded her of her wife. That time he tried to steal a spell scroll and Fjord threatened to kill him. That time he burned his family alive in his childhood home and went catatonic for a decade.
The phrase “go big” as an encouragement wasn’t supposed to apply to his fuck ups. But it does. Oh, it does.
Very rarely though Caleb comes out no worse for wear. And once, it actually improved his quality of life. Though it mostly made him miserable first. And the group nearly fell apart. Fjord almost died. More than once Caleb fervently called out to the Wildmother to have the earth open and swallow him whole.
But Caduceus still under-salts the soup for Caleb’s taste, and now his life is a little less bleak, so. All things considered

Summary
In Caleb’s eyes, it is picturesque. Dark, small, and a staircase leading up the porch that looks insurmountable, it’s still maybe the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.
He makes way for it immediately, and he hears the crunch of Fjord following after him, panting heavily and following along in the treads Caleb leaves. The snow buffets Caleb’s face, whipping his hair into his eyes and neck like little knives, and he presses harder for the unassuming little building, gritting his teeth against the cold.
When he reaches the staircase, he turns to look back. He squints through the wind and out behind them through the steady roar of snow. He can no longer hear the shrieks of the hags and sees no sign of them over Fjord’s shoulder, but that does not mean they are not still coming.
Something is always coming.

Treating injuries is a lot more time-consuming when you're out two clerics.
