Lucy’s lips pressed together. She could feel blood pool in her cheeks, and she wanted to cover her face in shame, only that wasn’t what she was supposed to do, and her limbs felt so leaden and heavy.
There was a whisper touch, a caress of her cheek and brow, the lightest pressure against her bottom lip. “Good girl. You have nothing to be ashamed of, Lucy. You’re doing what’s best to keep you safe. To help you heal. All you have to do is come to me. Think of me. And every time you think of me, how will you feel, Lucy?”
Lucy licked her lips, the tip of her tongue catching on the warm press of Penelope’s finger, still wedged against her. “Brave, warm, soft, open,” she whispered quietly.
