Anthony Lockwood, head of Lockwood & Co Private Investigations, is listless and unhappy after the death of his sister, Jessica, two years ago. Sordid divorces and grubby embezzlement cases pay the bills and fill the days, but the only respite he gets is the friendship (and gossip) at a nearby speakeasy.
Until, that is, his researcher George puts his foot down about hiring an additional P.I, and a new agent joins their team...

Lucy has been working for the Winkman's for as long as she can remember. But canaries burn out fast – too many relics, too much psychic trauma during what should be the brain's formative years. Live long enough, and canaries descend into madness.
Lucy knows that it's not normal to carry on conversations with the dead, but it's getting harder to differentiate between the living and the not. Between age old memories and her own. She’s lived a thousand lives, loved and lost a thousand souls. There's blood on her hands, and it's sullied more than her skin.
But the boy tied to the chair isn't tainted in the same way she is. And she thinks that maybe she'd like for him to stay that way.

Lucy choked to a stop as her face paled. George looked up at the pause, confused. Her gaze had shifted down to where her hands rested on Lockwood’s arm. An arm that had developed a tremor which was increasing in intensity by the second. Lucy and George jerked backward as the tremor spread, watching Lockwood’s entire body begin to shake.
