Summary
Because, despite all pretences, despite how much she tried to convince herself otherwise, she knew the unfortunate truth: this wasn’t a home. It wasn’t even a room.
It was a prison.
Oh, a beautiful prison, sure. All of her furniture pieces, the bed, the chairs, hell, even the damn chess table, were ornate, hand-carved and painted to the point of perfection. The walls, underneath the ridiculous amount of stuff over them, were a beautiful pattern of snowflakes and trees she’d begged for when she was five. The window, as covered as it was, was host to one of the greatest views in all of Atlas: the mountains and city of mantle far below and far removed from the scenery that she was currently surrounded.
But it was a prison nonetheless.

Absent, cold, and stoic are all things that the moon has been called. All titles that the moon has earned through centuries and centuries of its silent vigil. Never acting, never intervening, no matter what happened across Earth's surface, but always watching. Always observing.
Always mourning.
"Why?" One of the sisters asked, dressed in red from head to toe, her hair a shock of white protruding from the top of her skull and falling over her shoulders in an unruly mane. "Why us?"
The moon sighed, and its voice was none of the things that it had been called. None of the titles it had so rightfully earned.
Because there is no one better equipped to protect the children of the world.

____“Right, so, let’s get the basics out of the way.” She sits up straighter and claps her hands together, folding the fingers over one another until just her thumbs and pointers are still extended, pointed at Winter.
“You are a princess from the ninth century who was cursed by her father, the king of a newly established Schneestadt, and ended up as a statue until we accidentally freed you, somehow.”
She pulls her hands back, turning them so that she's pointing up at herself now.
“I’m a University Student who came to Schneestadt on a school trip to do some research for my German minor, and was sightseeing with my sister when we came upon your statue and decided to take a picture with it because it's a popular tourist destination.”
Her hands finally come apart and land on her knees.

Summary
This is becoming much too common for her taste.
Much, much too common.
The feeling of exhaustion that seeps through her entire body as it slowly becomes aware of its surroundings once more. The dull ache of muscles pushed to their physical limit, the throbbing that has coalesced between her eyes and beats in time with her heart, the horribly dry feeling in her mouth that makes her want to roll over and spill her guts... all of it should not be as nearly familiar as it is now.
She can already hear them, their footsteps sure, their laughter and triumphant words the inevitable cheer: it's all come to take her back to the place she last was, come to take her far, far away from the wreckage of her own emotional failings.
