    He’s hunched over the wooden rim, loose, sterling hair cloaked over his shoulders and back like fine drapery. His palms have dirt on them, like he’s dug at something. He doesn’t flinch when she comes to stand beside him, well aware of her presence, just as she, too, knew he would be here long before she made the journey from her hut.

    “You should be resting,” is the first thing he says. His voice is so quiet she can’t even tell it’s him. It seems to get gentler as the year passes by.
