    Summary

Vi scoffed and stomped forward, the gravel crunching beneath her feet as she approached Caitlyn, who looked up at her with an empty, disinterested expression.

She stopped right in front of her, chest puffed out, voice dripping with venom.

“Good lord, Kiramman, maybe pace yourself for once. What’s the plan? Smoke yourself into an early grave so we don’t have to deal with you anymore?”

Caitlyn’s head jerked slightly, her features a cool mask of indifference.

“Though I am flattered by your concern," she said icily, taking a slow, deliberate drag from her cigarette, “I assure you that I am perfectly capable of handling myself, thank you very much.”

“Oh, yeah? Is that why you’re here?”

Caitlyn slightly perked one of her eyebrows. The look on her face made Vi immediately feel incredibly stupid and childish.

“No. I am here to smoke a cigarette. In peace. Why are you here?”

    Summary

It was a room. A very precarious state of what should be a room. Or maybe cell was a better description. There was a sink and a toilet on one side. A metal bed attached to the wall in front of her. Everything seemed very old, as if it had been stored and forgotten there for years.

Caitlyn saw she was not alone. Under the bed, occupying the smallest possible space, there was a person.

    A child.

"What's your name? I'm Vi," she continued when there was no response. If Caitlyn couldn't see the girl's chest rising and falling, she'd doubt whether she was even alive. "This is Caitlyn. Who are you?"

The minutes passed. Caitlyn was already thinking of her fifth contingency plan when the child moved. An almost imperceptible movement. A slight lift of her neck, allowing for a better view of her intruders. "Lavender," her voice was thin, yet hoarse, as if it hadn't been exercised in a while.

    "Nice to meet you, Lavender."

    Summary

It made sense in her head. Or maybe it didn’t because that’s what being with Kate was like. She couldn’t have space in her chest left for anything else that wasn’t Kate’s eyes, or her grin, or her hands. Or the way her hair turned brown in the sunlight. Or the way she greeted every barista by name. Or the way she picked out cilantro from her meals because she hated the herb but always forgot to ask them not to add it. Or the way she could calm the storms that sometimes took over Yelena’s brain with a simple touch to the wrist. Or the way looking at her made her forget why she ever swore off attachment in the first place.

She picked out all the bad cherries for her.

    Summary

It all started with a note - written in the ugliest handwriting Caitlyn had ever seen.

"I used your bed. Funny fact, you smell like cupcakes."

In the break room, they had six beds distributed for use among shifts. But Caitlyn's bed wasn't part of that set. No, she had bought a seventh piece of furniture with her own money - with a mattress specifically made for her shoulder and lower back pains.

Everyone knew they shouldn't lie down there. Except, apparently, the new hire.

As a first offense, Caitlyn decided to let it slide, with a simple note on the bed.

    "Property of Caitlyn Kiramman."

Maybe the mistake had been due to ignorance, after all. Although, three days later, to her complete displeasure, came her response.

"Good to know you have a name, Cupcake. PS: your mattress is really good."
