Summary

"It started, as most of his illnesses do nowadays, with a cough.
At first, he hardly even noticed an increase in his coughing. After all, summer was rapidly heading into the cooler weather of fall, and that usually affected his remaining lung as it was. That didn’t even take into account the early fall bout of the flu that had been passing through the school like wildfire. Chalking it up to one of these, he simply shrugged his shoulders, stocked up on cough drops, and wore a mask while he taught. And for a while, this seemed to work, well enough to trick him into thinking he wasn’t getting even worse.
But then he started having trouble getting up the stairs without wheezing. The first time it happened, he thought he had just taken the stairs too fast and vowed to take them a little slower, not skipping steps like he often did. The second time it happened, he found himself bent double over his knees, coughing into one of his many handkerchiefs, soaking it with blood. He was now more than a little concerned."
