Regulus Black hated his older brother.
It had been written in the stars from the moment he was born— an unchangeable fact, set in stone across every possible universe. And by extension, Regulus hated his brother’s friends. Especially Remus Lupin.
Regulus made a vow, somewhere between his first and second year, that he’d hate Sirius and all his friends until the end of time— no exceptions.
That was the plan, anyway. He was doing great, until the start of sixth year, when Remus stepped off the train, bathed in September sun, and looked so devastatingly good that Regulus’ heart had the audacity to skip a beat.

“It’s just, well… Remus, does he have friends in the class at least? I worry that he’s lonely,” Sirius says. “If it can’t be me… I mean, does he have anyone?”
“Well no,” Remus starts but is abruptly cut off.
“Not at all! It’s so strange, no one will even go near him- ow” Remus pinches Peter hard.
“Shut it, Wormtail,” Remus bites at him then tries again, “Not in calc, no. But I’ve seen him ‘round with that scary bloke. Not sure his name… tall, dark hair, piercings?”
“Barty,” Sirius rolls his eyes.
“Sure. What’s his deal?” Remus asks, not really curious, but allowing Sirius to vent anyway.
“He’s a cunt, that’s his deal.”
“Right,” Remus says.
“Moony, maybe next time you see him would you try to- I mean could you just ask how he’s doing?” Sirius asks. “I’m worried.”
