Summary
On Wei Wuxian's second night in Lotus Pier after being kicked out of his room by Jiang Cheng, he left to wander the compound. As he walked down a hallway he heard crackling behind him. He was struck twice with Zidian just a few weeks after developing a golden core, leaving him disabled permanently. Madam Yu had threatened his life if he ever said anything about what happened, so he stumbled through life with her seething at his heels. He didn't know what it felt like to be completely safe anymore.
At eight years old Lan Zhan spoke up. His mother had died only a month before, leaving him alone in the silence nobody else seemed to understand like her. He sat outside the Jingshi everyday that he broke no rules, hoping for her to come home and tell him he behaved well. Lan Qiren began to punish him with lines for this supposed rebellion, and eventually used the discipline stick. Lan Zhan lashed out, reciting every rule Lan Qiren broke since their mother's death, and used his minimal spiritual energy to snap the disapline stick in two. He was sent to solitude in his dead mother's house for a weeks time, forcing their abnormal heir out of the world's eyes. This was their preferred method from there on.

Hwang In-ho watches as Gi-hun is forced back into the room with the other players.
He sees that the fight has left him.
In-ho knows, if he doesn’t step in, Gi-hun will be dead by the next game. This should be good news- he has incited a rebellion after all, him gone would be one less problem on In-ho’s plate.
So why does he feel heavy to think of Gi-hun dying?
There’s only one way for In-ho to keep tabs on Gi-hun and keep him alive for a later date: to re-enter the game.
