One day the kingdom of Camelot receives a message that Cenred, the King of Essetir, died of an illness. The king and his son decide to invite the new king to Camelot, not knowing that it wouldn't be Cenred's son Mordred, but his secret, and gorgeous, husband Merlin instead, who Arthur almost instantly falls in love with.

Summary
10 years after Arthur learns about Merlin's magic everything is going smoothly. Arthur became the king Merlin always knew he would be. But all is not well. Merlin's magic is too much for his body to handle. As time goes by his body starts to shut down. Merlin has accepted his fate and just wishes everyone else would too. His only regret is leaving Arthur behind to rule Camalot by himself.
Arthur can't believe this is happening.

"Father, are you insane? It can't have been Merlin, I know him very well, well enough that if he had magic, I'd surely be aware of it!" Arthur argued. He waved his hand at Merlin and pleaded, "Merlin, tell my father he's wrong, that he didn't see what happened right." Merlin was silent. 'Go on, tell him," Arthur continued. 'It- it must've been a trick of the light, an illusion. Come on Merlin, tell him. Please."
There was nothing Merlin could say.
