Summary
Three weeks after Jon returns from his year-long trip with Jor-El, he decides to retire as Superboy.
He returns to the 21st century as one of the Lost Boys, the sensation of anti-gravity clinging to his frame like cellophane. Superboy fits like a too-tight shirt, sewn together by nostalgia and the fabric of childhood.
He is not quite a man, but he’s not quite a child. The things that he experienced have made him world-weary, more liable to look over his shoulder in the dark. He doesn’t dream anymore. When he does, his nightmares are filled with fire and magma and a sunless sky. He wakes with tears in his eyes and a jaw clenched so tight his teeth ache.
They thought he was dead. He guesses that's something to be thankful for, that when most people think of you as a distant memory instead of a real person, leaving behind the cape is easy. A quiet affair. A gentle mercy.
In which Jonathan Kent reconsiders what heroism means, relearns how to fall in love, and returns to a home that he no longer recognizes.
