Nikolai thought of life as a sort of half-sleep. The couch kind. You fade out in the middle of a thought. You come back not knowing if you’d gone unconscious or not. You don’t dream. You only imagine. You wonder: is this all there is? There are gas station doorbells and laundromat dryers ringing in your ears. The slats of blinds erect crooked prison bars across your eyes. And the stench of cigarette smoke wafts into your nostrils, and the Devil has returned to you with a bottle of vodka, and he wants to share.
“Fedya, it’s two o’clock in the morning,” Nikolai said flatly—no theatrics at this hour, and not in this mental state—but opened the apartment door wider and let him in.
“We are a pair of insomniacs. You expect this.”
“Are we a pair of anything?”
He was fixed with a look from Fyodor that was resigned like a dull blade, hacking at soft things until they ruptured because it could no longer slice.

Trembles ripping down spine indicated he was spot-on. Nikolai cracked a triumphant grin. No more hemming and hawing. He strode in front of Fyodor, tipped chin up with the cane and looked him straight in the eye.
“You have a thing for being tied up, don’t you?”
