“You only have one bullet,” Connor muses, eyebrows raising as high as they can go without disturbing the muzzle pressed between them. His volume lowers, the veneer of indifference beginning to splinter at the seams, but Hank can’t place the strain of it. “We could make it a game if you’d prefer.”
Hank is the one holding the gun, he is undoubtedly in control of this situation, yet he has rarely felt so utterly powerless as Connor smoothly raises his hand and with a quick flick of his wrist, sets the cylinder spinning.
After a couple of revolutions, Connor gingerly stops it with two fingers. He nudges it a single chamber down with a click.
“You go first.”

It’s then that it hits them like a brick to the chest— cigarette smoke weaving with cheap cologne, scent stale and bitter in the still night air. Her cigarettes, her cologne.
The hairs on the back of their neck rise with the fog pressing in, swallowing the cemetery from every direction. Even the crickets and creatures of the night have stilled into a suffocating silence. They are being watched but they cannot bring themself to turn around and break the illusion that it’s her eyes following them.
Any sane person would be running.

Summary
Caught up in his strange awakening and overbearing concern, Arcade had yet to register the assault on his senses that was Sol’s scent. It hung thick in the air, so far departed from the faint hint of gun powder and sweat he had come to associate with the courier that if he’d not seen the source of it he’d have thought there was an intruder. It was pungent, heady, distressed.
Something twisted in Arcade. The pain was one thing and as much as he desired to soothe it, it was difficult to forget the uneven raised scars painting a mural beneath Sol’s thin sleep clothes, let alone that carved into his skull. He was no stranger to discomfort and he so rarely complained.
But beyond the pain was his scent, his behavior, Arcade himself. If he didn’t know better…
If he didn’t know better he would think that Sol was going into heat.

“I-I don’t get it. It’s… it makes sense for Lily, but it’s a pre-war holiday, why do the rest bother?” When Arcade said nothing, Sol concluded more faintly, “It j-j-just seems… frivolous, I guess.”
Arcade finally retrieved the key and pushed open the door to their room. It was practically glowing inside. For as poor as their memory was, Sol was positive that the warm yellow string lights draped along the walls had not been there when they’d left that morning, nor the wreath hanging center above their bed.
“I thought a bit of festivity might be a welcome break from the dreary abandoned buildings we’ve been holing up in recently.” A barely visible pink tinge worked its way across Arcade’s face and Sol kicked themself.
