"You think Tommy was into me?"
Buck can't meet Eddie's eyes. "I mean, sure... why not? You're, you know, you."
Eddie is watching him. Like watching, watching him, and Buck's so sure he's seeing something - something that Buck isn't sure if he, himself, has seen yet. "Well," he's too playful, too loose, "we could always test that theory."
Buck's entire existence sours. "Okay, friendship is fine, but I draw the line at you, what, leading on my ex?"
Eddie laughs, blistering bright, and rolls his eyes. "Not what I meant..."
"So what did you mean?" Buck says through a laugh that spikes and splints like cracks through the syllables.
Eddie's grin tilts up at the same moment his head tilts down.

Buck takes it to the grave.
He doesn’t mean to. It’s just—with all that time he spent teasing death, all the motorcycles and factory fires and blood-coated grenades—death gets impatient, in the end. Right as he’s starting to take life seriously. After he puts his name on the lease, buys life a ring, like, I’m in this for the long haul. Death gets jealous, and Buck falls through a second-story floor onto a derelict wrought-iron stair rail, and his femoral artery begins the quick but methodical work of leaking out the next fifty or sixty years of his life onto the charred tile floor.Bookmarked by aastrea

Eddie straightens in his seat. “What does that mean?”
All four wince as a young man taps the microphone onstage.
“Testing, testing,” he jokes. “Welcome to the Cruisin’ Couples Trivia Tournament!”
The patrons around them cheer. Eddie digs his nails into Buck’s skin harsh enough to make him wince.
“Oh,” he breathes. “This is for couples.”
