Lucius is born on a warm summer’s night. The midwife places the newborn against Emily’s chest and he looks up at her with wide eyes. He is a special baby, she knows.
Her suspicions are confirmed moments later, when the midwife gasps and points at Lucius’ back. There on her baby’s shoulder a constellation is forming. Emily instantly knows what it is. It’s a mark of the fated. They are destined for loves that burn brighter and larger than any other, loves that cross continents and defy time and space, destined to meet a soul that understands theirs as if they were two parts of a whole.

Summary
Rose moves in across the street when he’s eight and she is seven. Their parents push for them to play together, because that’s what parents do. They’re not wrong about it though. The two of them get on like a house on fire and some of his happiest memories from his childhood are just him and Rose, sitting in the large oak tree behind their houses. Hidden up in the branches, between the millions of dark green leaves, they played together.

"I didn’t think we’d ever get this after all.” she tells him, tangling her fingers in the wisps of hair at the nape of his neck.
“What? An Alex and Willie engagement party?” he grins. “Because I saw that coming from when they first met.”
“No, you idiot.” she rolls her eyes. “This. Us- our relationship, or even just dancing.” Julie lets her words trail off, unsure how to explain what exactly she is feeling. “I just never dared to hope we’d get so lucky when you first fell into my life.”
“I know.” Luke whispers. “Most days I can’t believe I get to hold you either.” He softly runs a hand over the exposed skin on her back. His fingers leave behind a trail of electricity.

Summary
What comes next happens in slow motion. Luke’s foot catches on the last rung of the ladder. Julie watches as he stumbles a step forward, barely catching himself before falling on his face. The ladder clatters to the floor below. The trapdoor, no longer propped open by it, falls closed with a loud thunk, the lock clicking into place. They’re stuck.
“Luke!” she exclaims loudly. “Look what you did!” Julie drops to her knees in front of the trap door, desperately trying to fit her fingers between the wood and the stone to pry it open again. Of course it doesn’t work.
“What?” he snaps back. “I wouldn’t be up here in the first place if it weren’t for you trying to fuck us over.”
