Summary
“You are here because I require… consultation,” Stannis said, the word escaping him like a curse.
Davos managed not to smile. Melisandre nodded, serene as a priest at a funeral. Selyse looked confused.
“Diplomacy,” Stannis muttered, stalking the hearth as if it might be plotting against him. “Robert had charm. Renly has… whatever it is he has. I have justice. Or so I am endlessly reminded.” He skewered Davos with a look. “Ser Davos, what is your opinion of my charm?”
Davos cleared his throat. “You are… direct, Your Grace. Folk respect that. Mostly.”
“‘Mostly,’” Stannis repeated, voice as dry as salt. “And when they do not?”
“Then they are like to remember what happened to those who forgot it.”
Stannis allowed the faintest flicker of satisfaction—if that’s what it was, or perhaps just a muscle spasm—then squared his shoulders like a man about to sentence the concept of small talk to death.
“Let us begin,” he declared, “Pretend you are a lord in need of convincing. I will practice... persuasion.” He made the word sound like it tasted of vinegar.
(Or, Stannis Baratheon attempts to practice the art of diplomacy. No one is safe. Least of all his dignity.)

Summary
No one could remember the last time the Emperor had taken a day off.
Certainly not Grand Moff Tarkin, who had known Sheev Palpatine back when he was still fond of subtlety and the color burgundy. Nor could Mas Amedda, who’d spent three decades at the Sith’s right hand, ever recall the Emperor scheduling “personal time.” Even Darth Vader, who kept his own counsel and wore his own grief, seemed a little off-kilter—if, in fact, a cybernetic murder-machine could be off-kilter.
So when the memo arrived, it set off a chain reaction that would have done credit to a rebel sabotage team.

Summary
“I have news,” Catelyn said, her voice steady, if only just, as she clutched the letter in the frost-lit solar. “A letter from King’s Landing. From the king himself.”
Catelyn glanced at Arya, then back to Sansa. “King Robert and your father fought together in the rebellion. They were brothers in arms before they were lord and king. It is an honor for Winterfell to host him and his family. You must remember that, both of you.”
Sansa’s eyes sparkled, her voice eager. “Will we meet the queen, Mother? Will Prince Joffrey notice me?”
Arya slouched, boots trailing mud, tone sharp. “Why does everyone care so much about princes? They probably never get muddy or climb trees.”
—
“I am the prince,” Joffrey declared, his voice sharp as he straightened in the carriage, lion pin gleaming. “When I get to Winterfell, I’ll make Robb Stark yield before the feast is done. I’ll make them all bow.”Cersei’s lips curved, her gaze cold as winter. “Clever lions wait, Joff. Wolves may kneel, but not if you show your claws too soon.”
(Or perhaps the North’s daughters will prove stronger than southern crowns, and a lion’s pride will falter in the snow…)
