This was only the second road trip he’d been on, the journey identical to the one they’d taken as a group last year. The excitement–more akin to elation–that he’d felt during the car ride last year was nice to experience, but Toya would say that he almost preferred this mellow thrum of energy pulsing through him.
He was glad to be able to set this up again. It had taken some effort to plan everything out, especially with their schedules that never seemed to stop getting busier, but he knew it would be worth it.

Summary
He normally wouldn’t struggle so much with picking something as simple as a present, but Toya had been so good to him that year; definitely more than he deserved. Akito needed to make it up to Toya and show his appreciation for everything his friend had done for him. He didn’t even know why Toya did so much for him and stayed by his side all this time, but that just made Akito more determined to find something of equal value to all of Toya’s kindness.

Things changed when his father brought him to Kamakura for a recital. Leading up to it, he was forced to endure gruelling practice session after practice session. So, every evening, he snuck to the beach and played before the waves to vent his unspoken frustration.

After maybe hours of waiting (disproven by the sky only shifting one shade darker, though the apparent hours are no less palpable), they collect their snacks and sidle wordlessly over to sit on a brick planter box near the sidewalk, shrouded in the safe anonymity of the passing crowds.
An scoots closer on their perch, pretty sure this confession is going to be something made quietly. Mizuki takes a breath, their shoulders jerking upwards as if to store more oxygen inside solid muscle and bone.
“I just… wanted to tell you, that, uh… I’m transgender.” Mizuki finally looks sideways, letting their eyes meet. “I’m a girl. A transgender girl.”
An blinks, and it’s so quiet between them she actually hears her own eyelids crash together.
“I… know?” She sets down her crêpe in her lap. “Are you trying to… come out to me? You know I already know that, right?”
Mizuki finally gets to say the words out loud; An gets to bear witness.
