She knew that he hated it when she said that he didn’t need to protect her anymore. As if she was taking away something sacred and important from him. But if protecting her meant that he couldn’t be with her, if protecting her meant that he had to get hurt instead, she hated it. It wasn’t just about her being tough or thinking she can fight back if push comes to shove. It wasn’t about her being able to handle everything by herself.
It was because she was afraid.
She was afraid what he would do in the name of protecting her. She was afraid of losing him all over again. She was afraid that he would leave her behind and she knew that she wouldn’t be able to survive if she lost him again. She was barely able to the first time, but if she had to go through that again—it would destroy her. There would be no coming back from that.
