Lance flushes. "You're - ugly." He announces. Keith notes this is a stark difference from the observation he made earlier.
"Okay." He picks up his knife, examining the wear on the handle. Hm, he really should get the hilt cleaned up one of these days.
"Don't take that tone with me!"
"Okay."
"I don't think you're hot, Kogane. Stop it." Lance is standing now, straightening his back to appear taller than Keith (he still isn't, damn the height-enhancing properties of space whales) and pointing an accusatory finger at him.
"Okay."
"On god, across all the corners of the earth I've flown to, you're the- the ugliest thing I've ever seen."
Keith blinks, slowly lowering Lance's hand from where it was jabbing in his face. "The earth is round."

Lance sighs in frustration, scrolling through the sparse scraps of data compiled into his suit. There’s practically nothing about this stupid planet, other than -

Clicking on the highlighted letters, his stomach drops, because wherever that wormhole spit them out, it was far.

During a mission meant to uncover leads on Shiro's sudden disappearance, a compromised wormhole throws Keith and Lance into a strange area of the universe known as Liminal Space. Lance is alive. Keith...

"Do you want to watch a movie?" Lance broke the silence, sitting up to look at Keith.
"Depends."
Lance leaned into Keith. "On?"
"The genre," Keith lied. He would probably say yes to watching a movie of paint drying in slow motion if Lance really wanted to.
Lance rolled his eyes. "Just say that you want to watch a horror movie."
Keith shrugged his shoulders. Lance moved to stand, letting Keith's hands drop from his thighs. Lance looked down, pursing his lips." I hate horror movies."
Keith smiled up at Lance, tilting his head. "Yeah, I know."

Summary
After working too long in a soul-crushing corporate job, Keith finally caves to Pidge's insistence on working with them out in the middle of the Great Smoky Mountains. Keith, desperate to regain his artistic inspiration, packs up all his stuff and moves out to a desolate, phone connection-less summer in the mountains with his best friend. Along the way, he stumbles across a mystery that has him hiking all over the forest. The only catch? Pidge didn't mention that he'd be living a twenty mile hike away from them, in a cabin with another ranger - Lance, with the Earth-shattering smile, with the dozens of individually named plants in his garden, with the mediocre cooking abilities, and the magical skills on his guitar. So maybe Keith will rediscover his ability to paint, or maybe Lance will fry all of his nerve-endings before he's able to. Who knows?
Alternate description: A brief obsession with Firewatch and a few too many google searches got me really invested in the Smoky Mountains, and here we are.
