Summary
Ketterdam’s mist clung to the streets like a second skin, swallowing everything in its path. The bickering picked back up again, but Kaz let it all fade into background noise. The future. What an absurd question. The future was nothing more than a concept for people who didn’t have anything substantial in their lives. He wasn’t some starry-eyed idiot looking ahead to the next great innovation — he had real, present things to worry about.
But, as he would soon find out, Ketterdam had other plans for him.
Or, Ketterdam starts to undergo the Industrial Revolution, and Kaz has no idea how to keep up.

“Why?” he asks again.
Inej’s smile falters a bit. “Because,” she says a little shortly.
Kaz stares at her. “Why, though —?” he begins.
Inej cuts him off. “— make a goddamn wish.”Or,

Kaz needs money for a new microwave. An opportunity presents itself when he comes across a flier for a paid research opportunity - but he'll need a little help to pull it off.

Kaz snatched them back and slid them on with practiced ease. “I will replace you with a brick and drown it in the harbor.”
Jesper grinned. “But who else would make sure you don’t walk into walls when these get knocked off?”
Kaz pointedly ignored him.
