Summary
Marya wakes up trembling two hours after she had gone to sleep, heart beating faster than the pounding of wings. And suddenly she's pissed. Maybe it's avoidance, hiding the trembling of her hands by curling them into fists, or maybe she's just been angry for decades. Maybe she's pissed that she's trapped on a ship that she doesn't deserve to be captaining with a crew of people who have no idea what they're doing and a bosun who stopped meeting her eyes days ago.

Summary
The storm wasn't the worst they'd seen—not by a long shot—but it was enough to toss the Zephyr around, all wind and lurching weight. It was enough to leave Van gritting her teeth while leveraging her entire body to tie lines, yelling out orders all the while. The fall comes fast—one particularly nasty listing of the ship knocks her off balance as she's scaling the rigging, slamming her metal shoulder into a crossbeam. She lands hard, grunts once, and keeps going.

Everything changes when Adaine is 15. Days before she starts high school, days before she meets the bad kids, days before everything begins. She wakes up one morning coughing, lungs struggling to take in air. Different from the way her panic attacks feel, but still familiar. Somewhere through it all, she manages to take a gasping breath as if she were a shipwrecked survivor finally coming up for air. She gasps and her ribs ache with the force it takes to finally breathe.

Summary
When Aelwyn is trancing, Adaine usually is too. That means tonight, when a loud thump echoes dully across the room, Aelwyn is bolting awake within seconds. She peers over her top bunk to check in on Adaine and finds her no longer on her mattress but instead on the ground as if she had fallen out of her bed while asleep. She's awake now, eyes wide as they meet Aelwyn's, and then she's screaming something awful.

Summary
Sklonda calls and tells Sandra Lynn that she might want to sit down but she doesn't listen, always too stubborn for her own good. She takes the news standing up, hears the words "Bobby Dawn" for the first time in years as she's in the kitchen, halfway through making dinner.
