    Summary

“It’s so weird being out here when no one else is. It’s like we’re the last ones left.”

Remus hums in agreement. “Or the first inhabitants of a new planet.”

“Not much hope for populating this new planet is there.”

Moony cuffs him lightly on the shoulder. “You’re horrible.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

He spent all summer working himself up into a right state, pacing from wall to wall of his room building up palaces of the precisely right words to construe the magnificence of his grief all to arrive at King’s Cross and watch as Remus took him in blankly and muttered, “Thank you for saying that,” and it to hit Sirius that he wasn’t magnificent even in his repentance, that for all his efforts he didn’t amount to anything worth Moony’s time or attention, the fevered flame that had sustained him up until that point effectively withered down to nothing. He doesn’t think he’s felt properly warm since.

    Summary

    “Sirius?”

It takes a second for him to realize he’s wrong. It’s not Sirius’ voice, familiar as it is.

“No, though I’m not surprised you’d think so. I’m the overlooked sibling.”

The overlooked sibling, as it is, has backed away—James is sure his head was resting on his thighs a second ago. Regulus stands a few feet away now, his posture overly casual. One leg is stretched out gracefully before him while the other curls up to his chest. He’s calculated nonchalance, with an arm draped effortlessly over his raised knee. Playing a great game of pretend. He looks bored, almost. Almost, because there is no mistaking how sharp those gray eyes look, catching and dissecting every movement in the room. Resting on James with something like confusion.

This is just so lovely and beautiful, I can’t recommend it enough!

Chapter 3: Maybe he isn’t panicking. Maybe he just realized Regulus isn’t the same, but James is. Maybe it’s the realization that while he’d been treading water, the world around him changed.

James hasn’t. Pick him up six years ago and freeze him, defrost him now, he’s the same. A belt of trauma, a lot of tears, and several dozen panic attacks, but he’s the same.

    ~*~

And then, Regulus starts disintegrating before his very eyes. Turning to sand. James knows what happens when you tighten your grip on sand. The particles try to find the path of least resistance, and the sand slips out from between your fingers. Escapes through gaps. And James is so careful, but nature made hands that are the perfect shape for holding other hands. Hands aren’t made to hold sand. There are gaps between James’ fingers and in the creases of his palms. Sand finds its way through these small openings. Manages to find gravity, regardless of how careful James is being. It’s inevitable, and the worst part is, perhaps, that James watches it happen. Hand suspended, carefully balanced, shaking with the effort to remain undisturbing.

    And it’s not enough.

    Chapter 7: Back together!!

    Summary

“You are not bad,” James murmurs, carding his fingers through Regulus’ hair again as if he’s forgotten about how greasy it is. “You feel bad sometimes, yes, but that doesn’t mean you are bad.”

“I don’t know, James. I don’t know,” Regulus whispers. “Nothing makes sense.”

or, Regulus shuts off while James is on a work trip.
