    Steve could have done a lot more to help him get used to the 21st century, Bucky thinks during the daytime. A heads up about bananas would have been nice, at least, before Steve fucked off to the 1940s to be with Peggy, or whatever. He would go, too. But the past holds nothing for Bucky, not really, even if it would be the past with Steve. So instead he faces the future with Sam.

    It consists mainly of not sleeping, nighttime patrols of the tower, and rediscovering Peter Parker.

    Sam smirks, “yeah, why?”

    “Oh… well they kinda scared me, they were sitting on the counter and kept trying to rub their head on me.” Peter shrugs.

    Bucky smiles a bit, “Alpine does that a lot. She likes drinking from the faucet sometimes.”

    Peter’s eyes widened, “and I didn’t turn it on for her! I’ll be back!” he turns and darts back to the bathroom without another word.

    “I… could really use your help,” Peter forced out. “I know I webbed you that one time, so you probably won’t want to, but I don’t have anyone else to call. Aunt May is at work, Happy didn’t answer, and Tony isn’t… I’m all alone out here.”

    Even when he was hurt, Peter still managed to ramble.

    His last sentence made Bucky’s heart ache for the kid. Tony had probably been his go-to, but it had been months since he’d passed away.

    Bucky went through the same thing with Steve. He had Sam now, but they hadn’t been close at first. It took them ages to build a relationship worth having.

    “You’re not alone,” Bucky countered. “Where are you?”

    Or the one where Peter gets hurt and Bucky is the only person who answers, and Bucky helps him in more ways than one. Set sometime after The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
