    Summary

There’s a locker next to the desk, taller than Chip and rusty grey metal. His heart pounds in his ears – he’s got, what? One? Two seconds? He’ll never make it across the hallway into the office, but this locker might be close enough.

He throws himself in front of it. Grabs the handle. Behind him, he hears Jay shout “Chip, wait-!” but he can hear the screaming now; he’s out of time to act. He yanks open the door–

And is met by a void of pitch black and glowing purple eyes.

    Or,

I throw the albatrio into the Hadal Blacksite and Chip has an awful time.

    Summary

A clear, sunny day greets them when they step through the portal. The sky is a brilliant blue, a stark contrast to the dreadful grey and black that the crew had grown used to in the Black Sea, with faint wisps of white clouds dotting the open expanse. Birds cry and cartwheel freely above them, seagulls and osprey and sandpipers. Sunlight pours down on them from its midday position, warm and bright and nearly golden where it reflects off the sand and the waves. The waving blades of beach grass leading up to the hills of this island are lit up with fuzzy haloes that flicker as they move. Bugs chirp and buzz in cacophonous song, hidden in the living yellow grass.

It’s beautiful, and Chip gets to enjoy it for all of about six seconds.

    Summary

Gillion pushes open the wooden trapdoor, and can’t quite stop it in time before it hits the deck with a hollow thunk. He winces, freezing for a moment and listening for the creature, but the shuffling and wet noises don’t cease. Dread drips down Gillion’s spine, sinking like a stone within him; something is wrong here. Slowly, hesitantly, Gillion takes the last few steps up onto the deck, holding his sword ready before him.

He wishes he had stayed below.

“I do.” Ichabod snarls back at her. He’s angry and tired and sick of grief – sick with grief. He’s spent all morning chasing his family out of the house when they had the gods-damned audacity to tell him to replace his husband’s gun; he does not have the patience to fight with his soul, too.

    Summary

“How ‘bout you, Gill? You met your soulmate yet?”

He watches the triton pull in a deep breath, pushing off the railing and straightening his arms before settling again with the exhale. “The Champion of the Undersea cannot have a soulmate.”

“So, what, you just don’t have one?”

“My destiny does not allow it.”

He’s not sure he can put into words the low ache he feels in his chest at the thought of not having a soulmate – something a little like mourning and a lot like jealousy. Everyone who’s ever met their soulmate seems to think it’s the best thing that ever happened to them, and Chip wishes he could understand, wishes he could feel the same, but it’s different for him. Everyone he’s ever loved either dies a horrible, tragic death – or they leave him behind to deal with the shit hand he’s been dealt.

    Summary

“Alright, I get it. That’s enough. Be something else, Enid – I need you to help me figure out how to get home from here.”

At his side, Enid is very, very quiet. Where William expected to hear giggling, or rustling leaves, or ruffled feathers, he just hears soft breathing.

“Enid?” He asks, turning to her worriedly. She wasn’t hurt, was she? She didn’t seem like she was, but he also didn’t really check.

In a tiny pile of rotting leaves Enid stares up at him, legs splayed awkwardly, and sharp mouth held open. She’s still opossum shaped, staring up at him with wide black eyes. Sparks of stress travel up the bond to settle in William’s chest beside his own.

“Um.” She says, her tail curling inward from the stress.

"When I get sick of you, I’m simply going to kill you. The great Captain Chip of the Riptide Pirates, dead at my hands. What an honor.”

Reuben’s voice is smug and drips with mockery, and he wears a particularly satisfied expression. He looks like a cat that just caught a canary and has discovered the whole thing fits in his mouth at once. His black eye glitters maliciously, the purple one humming, and there is blood under his fingernails.

He should have known not to sneak up on Gillion – not after a year of Gill jumping out of his skin on his best days and nearly biting off the hand of the offender on his worst. He certainly should have known better than to sneak up on him when everyone is as stressed as they are.

He made contact, grabbed Gill’s shoulder with a dramatic "Grah!" and-

He hadn’t even seen Gill move.

    He should have known.

There is a pained cry behind him, gurgling and desperate, and then silence, and Chip’s blood runs cold. His throat feels tight as he turns to face the fountain, the heaping mound of marble and ichor where he last saw Gillion Tidestrider, his co-captain, his best friend. He blinks at the rubble, watching the last of the dust settle, revealing the wreckage.

    His heart stops.

Her heart stutters in her throat.

    Gillion hasn’t moved.

He’s lying flat on his back in the grass and leaves, limbs twisted awkwardly around him. Blood pools around the shoulder the direwolf bit. His tail doesn’t so much as twitch, his fins laying limp and crumpled on the ground.

    Summary

Gillion has lost track of the conversation. He knows he was part of it, but the attention drifted away from him at some point and he’s left to just… breathe.

He’d hit the ground hard at the start of their escape, and while necessary to prevent any unneeded harm from coming to the child-king and his retainer, it fucking hurt. He doesn’t regret it – of course not, he’s not that selfish, and it was better him than anyone else – but he does wish the adrenaline that had dulled the edge of it had not faded from his system quite so quickly.
