One moment, Richard was standing in his home; the next, the floorboards under his feet melted and he was plunged into murky darkness, his limbs trapped in liquid cement, slow and weak as he struggled to reorient himself.
Then, an invisible string wound itself around the bones of his ribcage, threading through the gaps, securing its grip on his chest, and pulled. He could almost see the thread, thin and glinting silver, as he was dragged into oblivion, the muffled roaring of wind ringing in his ears.
Richard’s eyes cracked open to the familiar sight of a giant owl sculpture. It loomed over him, water trickling from its downturned beak and down into the basin by its feet.

That is stretch of time in which Dick waits to die. He feels the blood rushing to his ears pulse at a slower rate with each second, the burn in his lungs hotter than the scorch of seven days in a desert without water.
The art of waiting seems redundant here, but it is no matter, because time finally has Dick under his palm, with control over everything but his mind. All he can do is count.

The first time, House had kissed Wilson in front of a crowd to annoy him. Wilson, after failed attempts to get him off, simply, furiously, kissed him back. He saw his blue eyes shoot open, shocked, and eventually he tried to pull away, which Wilson didn’t let him, because he’d be damned if he let the man off so easily.
They shoved each other away in the end, both panting from the lack of oxygen. Wilson couldn’t remember if the crowd swarming around them had been looking at them, or if House had achieved his motive in the end.
He only remembered House looking up, the last traces of red lingering on his neck as he let out a breath, his gaze amazed.
“Wow,” He had laughed.
