Inej regarded him carefully, narrowing her eyes and crossing her arms. ‘What would you have me do?’ she asked, putting as much determination into her voice as she could. ‘I will not leave here just to become a whore for your gang, Mister Brekker.’
Kaz raised his eyebrows at her words, but he didn’t look angry. Instead, he looked at her thoughtfully, and she waited patiently as the silence between them grew.
‘If you accept my offer, join the Dregs as our spider, you’ll…’ he paused for the briefest moment, clearing his throat. ‘You’ll be mine. You’ll share my bed, and be under my personal protection. And,’ he added, his eyes fierce now, blazing and dark, ‘I promise that no-one else will ever touch you, Inej, or even look at you the wrong way. I won’t tell you any kind lies to lure you away from here, but if you join me, I will take care of you.’

Kaz had to admit the traffickers were surprisingly clever – for thick-skulled pirates, at least. He had not expected to be ambushed on the site of his future textile manufacture out of town. Or, well, what was supposed to be the site of his new project. Seeing as he’d been set up, it seemed he would need to find a new abandoned warehouse to repurpose. It was an annoying detail that would have to wait, however, since he was presently tied up to a chair.
Inej's enemies capture Kaz to lure her in a trap. It doesn't end well for them.
