“What number do you want to wear?”
Nate raises an eyebrow. “Uh, 29?”
The woman shakes her head. “Sorry, that one’s taken. You’ll have to pick something else.”
Nate frowns. Taken? But that’s his number. Who could have taken it?
“Sidney!” a familiar voice shouts, and then Sid is dropping his bags and running straight into the arms of Marc-Andre Fleury. He’s smiling broader than Nate’s seen in months.

Nate goes to Worlds and finds himself stuck with an adopted rookie who reminds him a lot of himself when he was first entering the league. In between playing hockey and trying to make sure Macklin doesn't do anything dumb, Nate falls in love with his best friend.

Willy raises his eyebrows as he turns to face Auston. “Dude, you’re the captain of the fucking Toronto Maple Leafs. No chance he doesn’t know who you are.”
“If he does, he hasn’t said anything.” Auston shrugs. “Willy, I’m screwed.”
Willy grins and there is zero sympathy on his face. Fuck him. “You’re in love with the barista who you think is cute but you don’t even know. There’s a difference.”
“I’m not – I’m not in love,” Auston splutters, chucking a pillow at Willy’s face. “And no. I just-”
“-you’re a middle school boy and you have a crush,” Willy trills. “That’s so much better, oh my God. We’re going to the coffee shop when we’re back home.”

Auston's become a regular at a very particular coffee shop. He'll let the barista that's there every morning think it's because he really likes their coffee. (It's not.)

As soon as his agent picks up, Macklin spills the tea while it’s still piping hot.
“Is there anything in my contract about… physical relationships with staff or, like, people in the organisation?” Macklin blurts out.
There is a very pregnant pause. “People in the organisation?” His agent repeats slowly. “What did you do, Mack?”
“Nothing,” Mack says, too quickly to sound convincing. “Just… hypothetically.”

Or, Macklin spends the hottest night of his life with a pretty boy whose blond curls are nothing short of gorgeous. The next morning, he finds out that he just slept with the son of the man who owns the San Jose Sharks. He does not handle it well.

Summary
Will loses a bet. Mack loses his mind.
He realizes now, in retrospect, that perhaps all of this was a mistake on his part. Because the reality of Will being pressed all along his side, laughing into a Sprite, looking comfortable as anything amongst their teammates and the WAGs while wearing a slinky, strappy black dress with a high slit that shows off his fucking shaved legs....
Mack may have underestimated what this would fucking do to him.
