You also thought he was worth it in Siberia. You dropped that shield for him twice, Steve. You thought he was worth it when nobody else did, me included,” Sam paused for a moment, watching a barrage of emotions flicker across Steve’s face. “And you thought he was worth coming back for.”

    Sworn to silence by the Air Force after a friendly fire accident in Afghanistan, former aid workers James and Sam have come home to take over Sam’s family’s vacation rental business to escape the bad memories. Losing an arm and working maintenance wasn’t how James pictured his life turning out, but his life is good: He likes fixing things, he gets to work for his best friend, and he loves surfing every morning.

    Fresh out of the ice, all Steve wants is for SHIELD to announce his return and let him get back to work so he won't have time to think about all he's lost. But when his psychiatrist refuses to clear him for duty until he's dealt with his trauma, he reluctantly accepts Tony's offer of a beach house for the summer to settle his mind. Armed with a false identity and a stack of sketchbooks, his only goal is to get back into the field. He's got no intention of letting his heart defrost along with the rest of his body.

    That is, until a handsome maintenance man with a secret of his own shows up with a gallon of ice cream and a smile that could light up half of New York.

    Ah, so that's why then. Stark doesn't need him anymore. He’s already convinced Steve enough. Bucky stays silent.

    ‘’And I guess we were wondering, if, you know, you’d be comfortable coming to live with us. At the tower. Steve came back last week, and I’ve talked to T’Challa too. He says if you are ready…’’

    ‘’Okay’’ Bucky agrees almost immediately.

    He likes Wakanda.

    It is peaceful.

    But it is not home.

    "Steve was good," Bucky tells her, but even as he says it, it doesn't sound true.

    Yelena can tell, too. "As good as he was in the Void?" she asks.

    "That wasn't him." Bucky shakes his head and looks down at the sandwich clenched in his metal hand. He had nightmares again for weeks after that. "Steve was... he was my best friend. He was my family."

    Yelena closes one eye and squints at him. “Family like the wife or family like the brother?”

    Bucky makes a face and shoves her so hard she cackles and drops the pickle slice she was about to put in her mouth.
