Summary
Steve thought he was taking a research assistance position to make ends meet after losing his scholarship with Stark Industries. Instead, he found himself locked in a facility, corridors humming with controlled silence, the air heavy with fear.
There Steve meets subject 13 – but they call him the Asset. Silent, bruised, each movement measured, cautious, always braced. Rumlow runs the program with quiet cruelty—the kind that doesn’t need to raise its voice. Guards look away. The walls absorb every sound, every suppressed cry, every fraction of hesitation.
Steve keeps his head down at first, but he watches. He studies the subject’s hands, the way he flinches before anyone touches him, the barely-there breaths, the almost imperceptible nods. Slowly, with patience and care, Steve starts to reach: tiny adjustments to the prosthetic arm, careful words, a steady presence amid the chaos.
The subject notices. Gradually, he lets Steve closer. Fingers brush against wires, eyes linger, a nod, a flicker of acknowledgment. Trust grows in the quietest moments: a shared breath, a hand held just long enough to matter.
For the first time, Steve allows himself to hope. Maybe he can put him back together. -
