It should matter that Akira is far bigger than life and death.

The first time, he’d done everything right— defied a God, saved the world, protected his friends. Whatever.
The second time, he’d met a girl he hadn’t noticed the first time through, gone up against a dream reality and won, saved the princess from her dead sister’s memory. No big deal.
The third time, he’d stopped giving a shit because what was the point? The last time, he tried and tried and tried and failed and got punched in the face for the trouble.
The world was saved, Goro Akechi was dead, and Akira Kurusu was, again, waking up on the same godforsaken train pulling into Shibuya station.
At least this time Akechi remembered.

“So I’m to be bait,” Akechi says flatly. “You’re serving me up.”
Ren can feel the grin on his face, and he can’t stop it. “I gotta open the store tomorrow, I only serve coffee.”
“Absolutely idiotic. Why would I agree to that?"
Ren shrugs one shoulder and leans back against the movie theater wall, smiling. He’s feeling light on his feet right now. It’s been a bad day, but the end is nice. “Call it penance.”
“Penance for what,” Akechi says.
His smile stays where it is as he glances away for a moment, then meets Akechi’s eyes again. “Being yourself.”

Summer vacation back in Tokyo was supposed to be two things: an exciting break from the mundanity of home, and a chance to see people he's missed so much it hurts. If he survives, Ren has good news for himself on both.

on november 20th, akechi goro kills the leader of the phantom thieves. on january 1st, dr maruki takuto brings him back.
(or: au where akechi's plan goes off without a hitch, and 2/2 goes a little differently.)
