The chanting of Mary Ann had been the macabre lullaby that his killers had sung him to death with; Edwin had undergone decades of torture, he suspected, as a direct result of his suspected inclinations. No, there was no joy in being a homosexual, in Edwin’s opinion. Charles was simply using odd language again.
    “Yeah. It means, like… you know. When two blokes fancy each other, they’re gay.”
    “Oh.” Edwin pivoted to face Charles. “So, gay is something of a synonym for homosexual, then?”
    “Yeah.” Charles grinned. “Yeah, it is.”
    “An odd linguistic choice, I must say. Back in my day, gay meant that someone was quite happy.”
    “Well, those chaps look happy, don’t they? So, I don’t know. Maybe it isn’t too far off the mark.”
