“Well, Will,” Mike says, and it’s serious, suddenly. Whatever he’s about to say, it’s important. Will stops pumping his legs for a second, slowing to a stop beside Mike. Neither of them are swinging anymore, just sitting side-by-side. Waiting. Holding their breath.
A little hand pops out of Mike’s jacket pocket, and he presents it proudly, bridging the gap between them. “Do you want to be my friend?”

Will groans, leaning his head back against Mike’s chest. “It’s for that stupid project for class. I have to paint a feeling, but, surprise surprise, painting something without a physical form is super difficult.” He sounds exhausted.
Mike squints his eyes down at the boy slumped against him. “Do I want to know how long you’ve gone without a break?”
“No, probably not,” Will responds sheepishly.
