“Mm-hmm?”
Silver stared intently at the ceiling as if it were the most fascinating thing that he had ever seen before. He could see Candle looking at him through the corner of his eyes, feel her soft breath against the shell of his ear. He tried not to shiver or shake or reveal any of the storm within him.
It was hard to do much of anything properly with her around him. His hands trembled where they were interlocked on his stomach, and he shifted to tuck them beneath his head. As long as she did not see it, it did not exist. Silver’s mind buzzed. He felt like he was floating away from his body, like there was only a thin rope keeping him tied to reality. It was now or never.
