    Summary

"The man standing in front of him is an affront to humanity. Dark eyebags, hunched figure, crumpled T-shirt paired with blank eyes and pale skin.

The man—thing? —then shuffles forward. Light looks down and immediately regrets it. The thing’s barefoot toes squelch on the hardwood floor which Light had just taken the liberty to sweep. He vows to himself to never do any good deed for anyone ever again.

Smile, Yagami, the voice in his head says."

    Summary

The bell dinged. Light stretched a smile across his face, as far as it could go, and just when he was about to say “Welcome!” in his brightest, cheeriest voice ever, the word wilted on his tongue.

The customer was a weirdo. Not even half a weirdo, not even slightly a weirdo, he was just a full-on weirdo. Light’d seen many weirdos, of course—that was sort of a guarantee of the job. He’d seen drunken love confessions, a guy pissing right next to the entrance, another who purchased twelve cartons of a dozen eggs and proceeded to throw them all out of the car window when he drove away. And on one particularly memorable occasion at 10.37 pm on a Wednesday, a well-dressed businessman had grabbed Light’s wrist, looked him straight in the eyes, and said, “Be careful, boy. The devils in Hell know you, and they’re coming for you.”

Now, looking at the customer before his eyes, Light realised how true that last statement was.

    Summary

He exhaled, going into the bathroom and locking the door behind him. Finally, finally, some peace and quiet—

“Hello,” a voice said from behind the shower curtain.

Light screamed, flinging himself away from the shower curtain.

“Don’t scream.” The voice sounded mildly annoyed, and a pale hand reached out and tugged the shower curtain open. “I don’t look that horrendous, I'm sure. And I'm definitely not as terrible as those people partying down there.”

Light stared at the person before him. He was curled up in the bathtub and looking quite content with the life choices he had made thus far, except he also looked like an anthropomorphic version of a raccoon whose main diet was derived from rummaging through countless dumpsters. The way this unknown person was hunched up in the bathtub was also reminiscent of a shrimp, and the sight made Light vaguely uncomfortable.

    “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to scream, I was just…startled, I suppose. I wasn’t expecting someone to be up here…”

    Summary

The other boy stared at him, and his gaze felt distinctly unsettling.

“You look like a serial killer.”

“...what?” If anything, Light looked more normal than the boy, and didn’t he know that that obviously isn’t something you can just say to people?

His watch beeped. His shift was up. Oh, dear God, he just wanted to go home.

“It’s always the normal ones, isn’t it? Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Dennis Nilsen…even Patrick Bateman from American Psycho.”

Light laughed. “You can’t be serious.”

“I also know that you’re very much on the verge of losing it—is it the end of your shift? It must be. And all you want to do is go home and sleep or study or whatever you do in your Normal Person Routine.” The boy grinned up at Light, frosting on his lip, and Light had the compulsive urge to wipe it away.

    Summary

When Light finally crawled into bed at midnight, an hour behind his usual schedule (oh, god, he hated when things were behind his usual schedule), he was royally pissed the fuck off.

First of all, he had a fucking fifteen minute shower before L banged on the bathroom door to ask him for the hairdryer. And then banged on the bathroom door again to ask when he could come in to brush his teeth and if Light was naked, both questions Light dearly wanted to say no to but clearly could not.

Second of all, L was terrible at keeping his belongings all to himself. Not in the nice, traditional way of oh, I’ll share this with you, but oh, I’ll dump my mess all on your side, which was exactly what he did and now L’s shirts were scattered on the floor around Light’s bed, vaguely resembling some sort of demon exorcism ritual, except with shirts instead of candles.

And the last reason of all, Light could not fucking sleep.

    Summary

They went back and forth, and back and forth, like some kind of perverted tennis match that involved Light getting angrier and angrier, and nearing the end he was absolutely steaming, because L was right.

    He did know everyone’s lines.

And that fucking sucked, because that meant he was getting this weirdo as a practice partner, and why couldn’t Light have just chanced on somebody nornal enough?

“Fine,” he said reluctantly. “You’ll do.”

“Oh, I did better than just a ‘you’ll do’, Light-kun, and you know it.”

“Whatever,” Light said, even more pissed, because L was right again, and c’mon, someone other than Light could get things correct against Light Yagami two times in a row? It simply wasn’t fair.

    Summary

“Ah, Light-kun. My plants aren’t growing very well recently, do you have anything for that?”

Light blinked. “...do you know which breed of plant it is…?”

L stared at him, and oh my god, please don’t open your mouth—

    “....green ones?”

And Light swore, if murder wasn’t legal in Japan, he would personally take L to, well, wherever the fuck it was still legal, to space if he had to, and murder him himself, because of the countless number of plants who had died by his hand and ignorance, and honestly he thought that many people would agree that it was a fitting punishment for someone like L.

    Summary

    Light Yagami should’ve known.

Whenever a transfer student comes into play, they’re either the love interest of the main character in question, or the weird kid who’ll get bullied, or an amazing genius that’ll compete with the current top student of the class and create a love-hate relationship that’ll span decades and extend to their children, and by extension their grandchildren, and probably their great-great grandchildren as well.

This transfer student, Light could tell, had already fulfilled at least one of the criteria.

    He was weird.

    Summary

“...who are you?” Light asked cautiously, still not turning around.

He could see it in a horror movie, actually: the closeup from the back, the dramatic eerie scream-like music swelling in the background, and this was probably the point where the ghost would kill him in a gruesome manner and leave the tomato blood to spurt all over the camera, and also the always non-existent cameraman.

Light Yagami, age 17, dies horrifically in a freak accident.

Amazing. At least the end of his life would be slightly abnormal.

    Summary

Saki seemed a little suspicious, but thankfully he didn’t try to pursue the topic any further (good for Light, because honestly he could barely stand the man—which was also true for most people who were not Ryuzaki), and simply nodded. “Thanks, Light-kun. If he’s still not here in two days, please help me go over to his house and check that everything’s alright.”

Light nodded, feeling like a bobblehead, and his face was already stiff from smiling so much.

“Sure thing,” he said, watching the red flow down the drain. “I’ll let him know.”

    Summary

At the end of the day L had received three more letters, a keychain, and a box of chocolate from two girls and a boy.

Light had the strange urge to kill somebody. Seriously, why did everyone have the stupid custom on confessing on the same fucking day? There should be a special holiday marked out called “Light Yagami’s Confession Day,” when Light, and only Light, could confess to the lucky person of his choosing.

Light stretches. “Humans change, Ryuzaki. It’s kind of what they do.”

“But Light-kun doesn’t.” Ryuzaki says this with a strange certainty, and Light knows he’s right.

Light Yagami doesn’t change. He never does.

    He never has nightmares, either.

    Summary

"When he was done, Light stepped up to the podium and dutifully recited a speech that he immediately forgot the moment he finished, which was remarkable, but judging by the looks on the students’ faces, it was memorable by their standards. Which was somewhat saddening.

And just like that the day was over.

As he walked off the stage, though, Light couldn’t help but sneak a backwards glance at L. Perhaps university wouldn’t be as boring as expected, if it was populated with these kinds of weirdos.

When he got home, only then did Light remember about the timer, but when he pulled his sleeve up it had already reached zero. Which was fine by him; he had all the time he spent at university to find them, after all, if he so desired."
