Gramps patted my shoulders and commended me for resisting the temptation of getting back together with the mackerel.

It’s an untrue statement, but Dazai is not the top courtesan because of her honesty. She generously doesn’t remind Chuuya that she hates her the most, and that she doesn’t really consider her as a customer. After all, no other customer in this brothel would actually refuse to sleep with her.

Dazai loves Chuuya: a truth that doesn’t change, in this life or in the many others that come after.

Dazai’s gone through this many times before - eight-hundred-sixty-four, tallies in his skin as he recalls each one of them and creates a plan from every piece of information he’s able to gather.
Chuuya loving him back is the main reason why he keeps on using Corruption until he dies from his own power.
Eight-hundred-sixty-four failures haunt him, but he’s also eight-hundred-sixty-four times wiser because of it.
Scenario eight-hundred-sixty-five will be the final one, he promises to himself.
He just hopes he’ll be able to keep it.
