Ardency is all he knows. It's not just the taste of defeat; it's the shame, too.
Living under Kira's fist, every day is a constant reminder of his utter failure. By day, he is forced to watch as the world bows down to a megalomaniac murderer. By night, he is forced to endure all that comes with being Kira's captive. Being his unrighteous trophy, his wife, the one he loves.
Although it hurt his body, it never stained his soul. No amount of abuse could make L submit. He may have stopped fighting back, after a point, but he never accepted any of it. Never.
So he waits. Waits for a breach in Kira's flawless regime, any escape he can cling to.
And when that escape, oddly enough, comes in the form of a religious fanatic with an unstable brain and vulnerable ideals, L has sharp eyes on him, determined to crawl inside his mind and turn things around.

L sighed, pausing from where he was kneeling in front of Li- Kira's feet. It was all hitting him now- the reality of it all. This wasn't a game anymore. He was going to die, and he was going to die today. Kira had won.
Set right after the scene where he is drying Light's feet and doing the slight digs, but... edited a bit. L realizes that he's not coming out of today alive, and makes a decision.

L is not often confused.
Indeed, it’s a rather rare occurrence that he can look at a problem without brainstorming numerous potential answers and theories, so his brain stuttering to a stop, unable or unwilling to process what was going on, was rather unsettling.
His brain felt sluggish, as if hesitant to take in any information other than what Light’s hand felt like pressing against his neck.
*********** A very self-indulgent fic about L trying to tease out a 'Kira' like reaction out of Light by any means necessary. 10k worth of a power hungry Light, a curious L desperate to prove himself right, and both of them finding that they mesh perfectly together.
