Summary
Wei Wuxian was bright, talented, impossible to ignore. Too clever, too bold, always laughing. He made friends easily, except for the one he wanted most. Lan Wangji, cold and distant, never encouraged him. But when Wei Wuxian fell, Lan Wangji was the one who dove into the abyss.
The night hunt at Biling Lake had gone wrong. Wei Wuxian saved a Lan disciple, pushing him to safety before the water swallowed him whole. Lan Wangji pulled him from the depths, unconscious but alive. In the infirmary, he stood by the bed, watching over him in silence.
Jiang Wanyin’s enraged voice cut through the quiet. “Always showing off! He got what he deserved!” The words hung heavy in the air.
The room stilled. The Lan healers turned to him, faces unreadable, but their eyes said everything. Disgust.
Nie Huaisang, silent in the corner, watched it all.

Whatever Jiang-Shushu was going to say Madam Yu beat him to it. Her smile grew even more pleased.
“Don't be stupid, boy. It's an honor to serve the sect in a marriage contract. Especially marrying into the Lan Sect.”
Objectively she wasn't wrong about that. His eyes stung. It was different for him though. Four years ago he stayed in the Cloud Recesses for the guest lectures and was thrown out by Lan Qiren in the end. How would he survive living there?
Or: Wei Wuxian marries into the Lan Sect expecting to be miserable but slowly learns to make it and the people of the Lan Sect his home. And maybe he'll even get to keep it for once.
