She digs into her pocket. She pulls out her keyring, heavy with too many copies of the same key.
It’s been years but her thumb pauses over the metal ever so briefly before she slides the key into the keyhole and locks the door with a practiced turn of her wrist.
The click is quiet, smooth, the latch perfectly oiled.
Her slow breath fogs in the air. The sun won’t be rising for another full hour but the birds are beginning to stir. It is a beautiful, crisp morning.
It will be a glorious sunrise.
