It’s not that she at four-five-six truly understands the gravity of the situation – it’s just that in some inexplicable way she’s already lived through every possible hardship, tasted all the flavours of pain that exist out there.

She can see the eyes following the woman in an oh-so-familiar way, and something sparkles in Pearl's chest. Understanding, maybe. Or, rather, recognition.
Like calls to like, and the two of them are the same, even if almost nothing alike. They're two sides of the same coin, the same idea in a different wrapping.

Her hands grip the bathroom sink of the seedy hotel in a spot somewhere far in the outskirts of the city, one harder than the other, almost cracking it by accident. And that’s exactly the problem, isn’t it, she thinks ruefully.
She’s human, but it’s hard to remember that sometimes, when she can see so plainly all those parts of herself that are decidedly not anymore.

Sometimes, when Jean shows up, the soft rev of his motorcycle announcing his arrival, James joins him and they work in comfortable silence together. Other times, James steps into his backyard after a day out of the house, and the only signs Jean has been there are the neatly trimmed bushes, weedless soil, and a basket full of fresh vegetables sitting on the back steps.
5 AM for a student-athlete who had played a tough game the night before is just too early for James to let slide. He sighs and flicks on the coffee machine before making his way outside.

His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
