It’s been better recently, with time and a not insignificant amount of therapy. Every day a little better. A little more stable. There are still days where his gaze lingers upon a bottle, or his fingers twitch to reach for a stash he no longer keeps in the lining of his jacket, but from the stories you hear you know how much progress this is. A large part of you is glad you never knew him before, that the man before you is wholly different from the one your new colleagues see when they speak to him. You do not think you would have liked the man he was.
