“You wanna carry the pain, yeah?”
A quiet sound of affirmation bubbled up from the back of the other man’s throat.
“So,” he whispered, throat dry, voice rumbling low. His touch returned to Vash’s chin, feather-light, achingly tender. He traced the line of it with his fingers, then up to the cupid’s bow of his mouth, brushing the pad of his thumb over the fullness of his bottom lip, “what’s it feel like when I touch you like this?”
Vash’s eyes fluttered closed, focusing in on the feel of his careful touches, looking anything but reassured. “It feels like… waiting for the other shoe to drop. Feels like…”
“Like a trap?”
Boundless-sky blue eyes opened again, and Wolfwood saw a flicker of recognition there.
Yeah, Vash and Wolfwood needed to talk things out, but... wasn't sex so much easier?

It’s perfectly normal for them to split up in the heat of a skirmish; after all, a small and nimble target is harder to hit. And it’s equally normal for it to take a few hours for the dust to settle afterwards - and for them to find each other again amongst the wreckage of whatever has somehow remained standing.
But this…..This is far from normal.
In the beginning, in those first few days of frantic searching - Nicholas steadfastly refuses to believe that Vash could possibly be dead.

The harsh cries of the jays faded, the trees crowding in thick and close, until even the rustling of leaves was stifled. Vash’s breaths turned loud in his ears, his heart picking up the unfamiliar tempo of anticipation.
Just as he hadn’t expected to find an invasive shrub in this part of the woods, so too had he been unprepared to find a man slumped in the cradle of a wych elm’s roots.

Nicholas hated his Soulmate Marker.
He would have even preferred the sappy shit the aunties at the orphanage gossiped about. Soulmate Markers that told the day they would meet, maybe even a mark that would fit perfectly with their Soulmate. Something sappy and all together nauseating.
But no, he didn't even have the boring matching marks or even the more common Marker of sharing scars.
He got a fucking bird.
