Steven rubs his palm hard over his eyes. When he looks back up at Wallace, he looks, simultaneously, like he’d aged twenty years, and like the stumbling Deerling of a teenager Wallace hadn’t seen since his father had risen to the highest echelon of Devon.
“If I’m considering siding with them,” Steven says, “you can see how bad it’s gotten.”

Where the Devon Corporation, Draconid Tribe, and re-made Team Aqua and Magma are inextricably linked together and simultaneously at each others' throats; where Zinnia's bloodthirst from her days of infiltrating the original Team Aqua and Magma drives the whole tribe to further violence; where Devon’s actions to save the region systematically destroy its ecosystem; where a union of ecoterrorist scientists have justified blackmail on the Champion's father beyond anything Hoenn has ever seen.
Sapphire works to protect Devon, Ruby holds back Zinnia, Emerald infiltrates the conjoined Team Aqua and Magma.
There is a meteor heading towards the region in two weeks.

“Sure,” she agrees slowly. She takes a pen, and traces over his mezzo piano. It’s acceptance. “Walk me through what you’ve done here?”
And he grins one of his Nikolai grins, then moves over slightly so he’s right by her side. He points at his first notation and starts to explain. “I kinda see what you were going for here, with the imagery, but if you change this…”
And they drift off into the night, two souls at the head of a ship on the open sea. They sail until they can see the stars.
