Summary
Bruce never planned on having kids. After watching his parents die, the idea of starting a family of his own was foolishness at best and an impending disaster at worst. Never in his wildest dreams did Bruce think he'd ever be up to the task of raising a child, and he was okay with that. But when an orphaned acrobat starts weighing on his mind, Bruce makes the (questionable) decision to become a foster father. Everything after that is just dumb luck.

Unlike Jason, Dick hated English class. Being his second language and all, it’s understandable that Dick was skeptical of the English language as a whole. He still is, really. It was frustrating for him to work out every nonsensical rule, like why the plural of goose is geese, but the plural of moose is not meese. Or why one can be overwhelmed and underwhelmed, but one cannot ever just be whelmed.
---
Baking quickly becomes his favorite. Alfred offers to teach Jason how to bake cranberry muffins for a bake sale at his school, and it all spirals from there. It’s astounding how so many people can look at Jason and see a troublemaker, when it’s clear that his talents lie in nurturing, in creating, in making beautiful things from thin air.
---
There’s just confetti, melted cake frosting, and family, and that’s enough for Bruce. It will always be enough, he thinks as he squeezes Tim’s shoulders and smiles.
---
It’s not that Bruce doesn’t like Stephanie. She’s a nice girl, and she gets along great with the boys. But her sphere of life and Bruce’s sphere of life aren’t exactly compatible. Stephanie is loud and pushy and completely ignorant of the fact that Bruce prefers the sweet silence of a still home. He named his first gray hair after her.
---
Stephanie crosses her arms. Tim’s hand hangs between them like it doesn’t know what to do without her touch.
---
“I don’t know,” Jay says, “my mom did meth while she was in labor with me and I turned out great.”“Weren’t you hooked up to a ventilator until you were three weeks old?”
“Details, schmetails.”
---
Bruce smiles. He wraps an arm around Stephanie’s shoulders, pressing his cheek to the top of her head. “Right.”Stephanie makes a disgusted noise. “God, you’re so embarrassing.” But she hugs him back anyway, chuckling. “Yeah, yeah, let it out, you emotional bastard.” When they part, she picks up the box Bruce put down. “Now shake a leg, Brucie. I stole Jason’s Xbox and I need to get on the road before he—”
“Who the fuck stole my Xbox?”
