Chapter Text
Caitlyn had already made herself comfortable on the shared bed. The sheets and blanket rested over her legs as she half-heartedly scanned the words in her novel. She’d heard the front door shut when Vi announced her presence over ten minutes ago, but it had been silent since then. She wanted to search for Vi, but her stubborn demeanor kept her from making the trip. Vi would come running to her anyway and beg for her attention.
Another ten minutes had passed before Vi’s head popped into the doorway. In her arms, Vi held a wooden surface with various items as she made her way to Caitlyn’s side of the bed. A barely containable grin was plastered on her face as she carefully put the surface on the bedstand and sat by a nonchalant Caitlyn.
“Hey, babe,” Vi said, taking an item from the wooden platform. She leaned in, not caring that she was pushing Caitlyn’s book to the side, and captured her wife’s lips with her own. Vi felt Caitlyn refuse to reciprocate, and the sigh that came from her was enough to make her begin to pull away. Her smile didn’t fade as she presented Caitlyn with a red velvet cupcake with white frosting and sprinkles. “I got you your favorite. And I paid for it this time.”
“Your shirt is wet,” Caitlyn noted, not acknowledging that she was taking the treat from Vi, “you’re not sleeping in my bed with those clothes.” The woman in question looked down to see the dark wet spots on her stomach and shrugged. Taking a bite from the cupcake, Caitlyn closed her eyes to savor the taste. She could hear the near-silent mumbles from her wife complimenting her features.
It brought her comfort. Despite barely being only in their early twenties, Caitlyn forgot that not too long ago they were under stairwells and bleachers, saying similar phrases to each other. She learned early on that Vi was more of a physical being, but that wasn’t to say that Vi had her moments where she could go on and on about how much she loved Caitlyn.
“Me and the neighbor’s kid found these plant things, and I wanted to plant one with you,” she heard Vi say. Caitlyn opened her eyes to see Vi grab what looked like a severely undergrown yellow onion. Then Vi had a cup filled with water with an overturned rounded lid. She placed the plant in Caitlyn’s free hand and held the cup between them. Vi looked up at Caitlyn, who examined the plant with confusion and gestured to the cup. “You just have to put it in the hole with the pointy thing pointing up... Do you want to plant it with me?”
Vi’s puppy-like eyes were something Caitlyn could never say no to her even when she was mad. Luckily, Vi hasn’t maliciously used them against her yet. Finishing her cupcake, Caitlyn sat up straighter and followed Vi’s instruction of gently putting the plant in place. Then they both sat in silence, watching the plant sit.
“So I assume we’ll know what it grows into in a few weeks?” Caitlyn asked, watching Vi roll her shoulders and put the cup on the nightstand again.
Vi gave a humorless laugh, “Yeah. To be honest, that was the most anti-climactic moment in my entire life. I wanted to make you feel better, but now I just feel kind of stupid.” Vi climbed over Caitlyn and laid down on her side of the bed.
Caitlyn watched her wife stare up at the ceiling and guessed that Vi hoped they would move past what just happened. Instead of turning out the light, Caitlyn leaned over her partner pushed her hair back, and pressed a chaste kiss to her lips. “It did make me feel better,” Vi received another kiss, “so don’t call yourself stupid, Vi. Thank you for the cupcake, and I appreciate the gesture.”
“I’m glad that you’re happy,” Vi smiled, “because now I can tell you that I didn’t have to waste a cent on that plant.”
