At age fourteen, Finnick is being sold to Snow's close associates in secret, knowing that any failure to comply will result in his family's deaths. After a horrifying first appointment, Finnick finds himself unable to stop resisting his clients. Haymitch tries to help him gain control, without doing more damage.
I was brought to the home of my first client. There was…a degree of violence that is never allowed. After that, I couldn’t stop resisting, even though I knew what the consequences would be. I was fighting real clients on real appointments. That’s why it was my tutor’s job to get me to a place where I could tolerate what was being done to me without triggering Snow’s punishment, and to get me there as quickly as possible.
